Reading: Thank You, Mr. Falker
This week we are working on character traits. Help your scholar to understand the difference between character traits and feelings using the video and trait list below. Then, if you would like to experience the text, a read aloud is linked to the bottom left.
Writing: Narratives
This week we are working on pronouns in our writing. We are learning about subject and object pronouns. A subject pronoun is performing an action, whereas the object pronoun comes after the action. For a visual, please see the below images. You can help your scholar to learn about pronouns in action by having them to identify subject and object pronouns when they read to you each night! |
Social Studies: Goods and Services
Since we have now learned about the branches of government, we are delving into goods and services. We now know that the government provides certain goods and services through the use of our taxes. Ask your scholar about wearing their Economist Hat! To be active citizens, we must know how goods and services move our economy. | |
Math: Subtracting fluently within 1000
Now that we know how to add fluently within 1000, we are learning how to subtract fluently within 1000. Like with addition, there are many methods of subtraction. Some may work better for your scholar than others. Take a moment to preview a few of the strategies your scholar is learning this week.
*Please keep in mind that the traditional algorithms we learned as children are not standard until 4th grade. Instead, students are learning to use their knowledge of place value and to develop their number sense so that they understand the concepts behind the traditional algorithm.*

You can help your scholar to develop their comprehension of word problems by posing questions to them at home, in the grocery store, or where ever you may go, using whole numbers. For example, "If I have $35 dollars in my wallet and I spend $22 dollars on groceries, how many dollars do I have left?" Or "If you have 59 Legos and you use 41 to build a tower, how many Legos remain?"
Below you will find some Addition and Subtraction word problems you can practice with your scholar.
